Senegalese JUCO Standout Papa Kounta Commits to UAlbany
UAlbany's international recruiting push started earlier this offseason with Papa Kounta, a 6-foot-6 guard originally from Senegal who committed after a standout junior-college season at Triton College. The Times Union reported that Kounta averaged 16 points and 8.4 rebounds, earned NJCAA All-Region 4 first-team recognition and received an All-American nomination.
Kounta's path is exactly the kind of development route Meta Africa Sports should keep in view. He came to the United States from Senegal, finished high school at a prep school in Virginia, spent a season at Frank Phillips College in Texas and then broke through at Triton. That progression shows how African prospects can climb through prep and JUCO levels before landing in Division I.
There is also a strong human connection inside the move. Kounta told the Times Union that he had a strong relationship with UAlbany coach Dwayne Killings and will reunite with Abdoulaye Fall, a former roommate from Senegal's SEED Academy. If Kounta's rebounding translates in America East play, UAlbany may have found an immediate-impact wing through a deeply African development pipeline.
